[2022]
— The exhibition features a twenty minutes video installation on a double screen, placed in the centre of the main room of Ateliers Blancarde. Outside the building, four photographs are mounted in light boxes and displayed on the windows overlooking the square and the Blancarde train station.
EXHIBITION ESSAY
— Iris Winckler discreetly shoots seemingly banal situations from a distance, with her telephone. Anonymous passers-by become the unexpected actors of comic, touching and poetic sequences. The addition of carefully selected music contributes to the singularity of each scene and creates an additional discrepancy. « Vu » (French for “Seen”) is a reference to social networks, where Iris Winckler regularly posts her images. But it also resonates with the Lumière brothers’ « Vues », the early images the inventors of the cinematograph made to demonstrate their device: short static shots depicting workers leaving a factory, the arrival of a train at a station, or the daily choreography of pedestrians and tramways on a busy Lyon plaza. Iris Winckler’s video work bears witness both to our contemporary compulsion to image-making and to the desire, which goes back to the origins of the moving image, to construct frames and scenes from the trivial gestures of passers-by. The poor materiality of the images, with their obvious pixelated, overexposed or underexposed quality, does not prevent each sequence from being somewhat cinematographic, confirming the pixel as a fundamental element of our times. The exhibition “Dernier Quartier” opened at the Miramas Artothèque in June 2022, and mixed works from the Artothèque’s collection with the photographic work of Iris Winckler. With works by Eric Bourret, Hugo Capron, Lucien Clergue, Lin Delpierre, Bogdan Konopka, Bérengère Leydier, Claude Nori, Jean-Paul Olive, George Rousse, Moon-Pil Shim, Iris Winckler.
